Wise & Reber, L.C., is pleased to announce that Kenneth E. Crump Jr. has joined the firm in McPherson. His work will be concentrated in the areas of Business Law and Commercial Litigation.

Crump grew up in Apache, Oklahoma. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from
the University of Oklahoma and his law degree from the University of Tulsa. For the past 38 years he has been a business and trial lawyer and has provided wide-ranging business advice to entities, has been involved in the structuring of their transactions and litigated an extensive variety of issues on their behalf in state and federal courts.

For 20 years, Crump also served as an Adjunct Settlement Judge for the United States
Federal Court for the Northern District of Oklahoma. He was selected and trained by the Court to
serve as a mediator in various types of federal cases. In that role, he conducted over 80 mediations.

Crump is admitted to practice in The Supreme Court of Oklahoma, The United States District Court for the Northern District of Oklahoma, The United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma, The United States District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma, The United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, and The United States Court of Federal Claims.

Baker Sterchi Welcomes Lindsey Freihoff in Kansas City

Baker Sterchi Cowden & Rice is pleased to announce the addition of an associate attorney. Lindsey Freihoff joins the firm in Kansas City.

Freihoff's practice focuses on insurance defense, personal injury, premises liability, municipal liability, employment law, professional malpractice and first-party claims. Freihoff is an active member of several local and state bar associations, including the Kansas Bar Association, where she serves on the Board of Editors for the Kansas Bar Journal, and the Johnson County Bar Association, where she is a member of the Young Lawyers Division, among others. Freihoff earned her law degree summa cum laude from Loyola University New Orleans College of Law, where she was recognized as a William L. Crowe, Sr. Scholar. She holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Kansas and is licensed to practice in Missouri, Kansas and Texas.

Dan Monnat, Wichita criminal defense attorney,  was honored with the Kansas Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers’ Lifetime Achievement Award at the organization’s annual meeting in Manhattan, Kan., on March 28. Monnat, who has been a member of KACDL since its inception in 1989 and served as president from 1992-1995, has taught numerous CLE seminars for the organization on such topics as illegal search and seizure, the frailties of narcotics drug detection dogs, and the defense of accusations of child sex crimes.

Throughout his 36-year association with KACDL, Monnat also has served numerous times as a member of KADCL’s Strike Force – a pro-bono team of attorneys who defend fellow attorneys facing the threat of legal action for aggressively representing a client.

“I am exceedingly humbled by the generosity of this lifetime achievement award, and fortunate to work with distinguished peers in the criminal defense bar,” Monnat said. “Criminal defense is often unpopular, bone-grinding work. I am grateful for each of my KACDL colleagues because I know we will always stand together, bound by our dedication to our clients, our respect for each other, and our passion for protecting the Constitution we hold dear.”

Practicing for nearly 50 years, Monnat has built a national reputation for high-stakes criminal defense, white-collar criminal defense, appellate defense and bet-the-company litigation. His cases have garnered major media attention for the defense and acquittal of late-term abortion provider Dr. George Tiller; the defense of an innocent man wrongly accused of being the notorious BTK; and acquittals and exonerations of clients in shaken baby murder and other murder, sex and white-collar prosecutions.

For his achievements, Monnat has been named five times to the Top 10 List of Missouri & Kansas Super Lawyers and has been included among the Top 100 Missouri & Kansas attorneys for nearly 20 years. He has also been named among the Best Lawyers in America for more than 35 years.

Monnat is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, the American Board of Criminal Lawyers, the American Bar Foundation, and the Kansas Bar Foundation. He is a Life Member and past Board Member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Monnat also currently sits on the Kansas Trial Lawyers Association’s Board of Editors and is the Criminal Law Chair.

Chief Judge Patricia Macke Dick will retire January 13 after serving 36 years in the 27th Judicial District.

The 27th Judicial District is Reno County. Dick was elected in 1988 and has served as chief judge since 2007.

Dick said she was inspired to become a judge from her time working in juvenile court.
 
“I realized it was the most important court we had because behavioral changes are easier earlier in life,” she said. “I found it fulfilling to help people make those changes, and while not always successful, there were almost always some changes in the way they parented and participated as families, and children were made safer.”
 
Dick grew up in Plainville and graduated from Kansas State University and the University of Kansas School of Law.
 
She said the most satisfying part of being a judge is when someone who has appeared in her court speaks to her in public.
 
“I’ll be at the grocery store, and someone recognizes me and initiates a conversation about how their child is doing, or even how they are doing,” Dick said. “Knowing there was a positive impact on people is the best feeling ever.”
 
Her dedication to justice extends beyond the courtroom. She has served on many councils, committees, boards, and task forces, and been a member of several professional organizations.
 
Dick served on the Kansas Judicial Council, the Chief Judges Council, the District Court Management Personnel Advisory Committee, the Supreme Court Task Force on Permanency Planning, and the Kansas Pretrial Justice Task Force.
 
She is a past president of the Kansas District Judges Association and a member of the American Judges Association, the National Association of Women Judges, the National Conference of State Trial Judges, and the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges.
 
Dick has been a member of the Hutchinson Women Attorneys Association, the Kansas Women Attorneys Association, the Reno County Bar Association, the Kansas Bar Association, and the American Bar Association.
 
She and her husband, David, have been married for 46 years. They have three children and six grandchildren. Her retirement plans include seeing more of her family and friends, traveling, and volunteering.

Chief Judge Glenn Braun, Hays, will retire on January 13 after serving 12 ½ years in the 23^rd Judicial District. The 23rd Judicial District is composed of Ellis, Gove, Rooks, and Trego counties. Braun was appointed as a district judge in 2012 and has served as chief judge since 2016. Braun graduated from Kansas State University and Washburn University School of Law. He was in private practice from 1981 to 2012 and served as Ellis County attorney from 1989 to 1997. He also served on the Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission from 2005to 2012. He is a past president of the Kansas Bar Association.

Corey L. Moomaw has been elected partner at Foulston Siefkin LLP effective January 1, 2025. Moomaw, a tax attorney, primarily practices in the area of trusts and estates. He helps individuals, small business owners, farmers, and ranchers create and administer estate and succession plans that protect assets, mitigate estate tax liability, transition businesses or farms to the next generation, and fulfill philanthropic plans. He joined Foulston in 2018. 

A western Kansas native from Dighton, Kansas, Moomaw is a Juris Doctor graduate of Washburn University School of Law who earned a Bachelor of Science in agricultural business from Fort Hays State University. Additionally, he earned an LL.M. in taxation from Georgetown University Law Center and served as a legal extern for both the Hon. G. Joseph Pierron, Jr., at the Kansas Court of Appeals and the Hon. Elizabeth Crewson Paris in the U.S. Tax Court. He was selected by peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America® in the area of Trusts and Estates for Wichita 2023- 2025. He is a graduate of the Heart of America Fellows Institute, offered by the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) to develop future leaders in trust and estate law.
