Kansas Bar Foundation Scholarships

We are no longer accepting applications for this year. The Kansas Bar Foundation is pleased to offer eleven scholarship opportunities. Listed below are the various scholarships and corresponding eligibility criteria and application requirements. 2026 Scholarships

This scholarship promotes the practice of law in the state of Kansas by awarding funds to a student admitted to attend or who is attending the University of Kansas School of Law or Washburn University School of Law. The scholarship is intended to help law students become lawyers in the mold of Frank Rice who was "among the finest … in the Bar. He was at the top of his class … and always applied the highest level of legal scholarship to any legal matter in which he was involved."

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be a Kansas resident

Additional Application Materials

  • Current law school transcript or if admitted to law school but not yet attending, your undergraduate transcript.
  • Two letters of recommendation (preferably from law school professors, judges, or practicing attorneys).

This scholarship will be given to a law student at the University of Kansas School of Law or Washburn University School of Law. Applicants should exhibit professionalism and high character in their personal and professional lives, as demonstrated in their application materials, and letters of recommendation. Applicants should also demonstrate a history of involvement in their community along with a bona fide intention to practice law in Kansas. 

Eligibility Criteria

  • Attending the University of Kansas School of Law or Washburn University School of Law

Additional Application Materials

  • Two letters of recommendation (preferably from law school professors, judges, or practicing attorneys).
  • Current law school transcript.

This scholarship promotes the practice of plaintiff’s work as well as the practice of law in the state of Kansas by awarding an applicant who exhibits professionalism and high character in their academic and personal life and has demonstrated participation in school and community activities. The award will be based in large part upon a student's financial need. Students of culturally diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Attending Washburn University School of Law
  • Express an interest in plaintiff's work.

Additional Application Materials

  • Two letters of recommendation (preferably from law school professors, judges, or practicing attorneys).
  • Current law school transcript.

This scholarship is available exclusively to Washburn University School of Law in their second or third year of study who are NOT receiving any other scholarship support. The award will be based on financial need and merit.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be a 2L or 3L at Washburn
  • Must not be receiving any other scholarship support

Additional Application Materials

  • Two letters of recommendation (preferably from law school professors, judges, or practicing attorneys).
  • Current law school transcript.

This scholarship promotes community service. The applicant must be a law student attending either the University of Kansas School of Law or Washburn University School of Law who has demonstrated a history of community involvement. Application materials should demonstrate the applicant's professionalism and high character in their personal and professional lives. The award will be based in large part upon the student's merit or recommendation rather than financial need. Students of culturally diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Attending the University of Kansas School of Law or Washburn University School of Law

Additional Application Materials

  • Two letters of recommendation (preferably from law school professors, judges, or practicing attorneys).
  • Current law school transcript.

This scholarship was established by the MVP Law Firm for incoming students with demonstrated interest to practice in Missouri, Kansas, Illinois, Nebraska, Oklahoma, or Iowa in workers' compensation, civil litigation, or insurance defense. Although not required as a condition of the scholarship, the recipient will have the opportunity to be matched with a mentor from MVP Law and have a shadowing opportunity over the semester break. Applicants must exhibit MVP's core values and beliefs. An award will be based on student participation in college/law school, community activities, financial need, and academic achievement.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Attending the University of Kansas School of Law, Washburn University School of Law, or University of Missouri at Kansas City School of Law
  • Intent to practice in the areas of workers' compensation, civil litigation, or insurance defense.
  • Intent to practice in Missouri, Kansas, Illinois, Nebraska, Oklahoma, or Iowa.

Additional Application Materials

  • Two letters of recommendation (preferably from law school professors, judges, or practicing attorneys).
  • Current law school transcript.

This scholarship promotes the practice of law in the state of Kansas by annually awarding funds to a student attending the University of Kansas School of Law, Washburn University School of Law, or the University of Missouri at Kansas City School of Law. Preference will be given to law students with the intent to practice in Kansas, with strong preference given to a student with the intent to practice in a rural area of Kansas. In addition, preference will be given to students who display a financial need and or are nontraditional students.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Attending the University of Kansas School of Law, Washburn University School of Law, or University of Missouri at Kansas City School of Law

Additional Application Materials

  • Two letters of recommendation (preferably from law school professors, judges, or practicing attorneys).
  • Current law school transcript.

This scholarship commemorates three generations of the Buser family who have practiced law in the state of Kansas by annually awarding funds to a student attending or accepted to attend the University of Kansas School of Law, Washburn University School of Law, or the University of Missouri at Kansas City School of Law. Preference will be given to a student who is the first in their family to attend law school and or a student with a disability. In addition, the award will be based on academic merit and preference will be given to students who display a financial need.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Attending or accepted to attend the University of Kansas School of Law, Washburn University School of Law, or the University of Missouri at Kansas City School of Law.

Additional Application Materials

  • Two letters of recommendation (preferably from law school professors, judges, or practicing attorneys).
  • Current law school transcript or most recent college transcript.

This scholarship promotes the practice of law in the state of Kansas by awarding a law student attending either the University of Kansas School of Law or Washburn University School of Law who is committed to practicing law in Kansas. An award will be based on merit and recommendations rather than financial need.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Attending the University of Kansas School of Law or Washburn University School of Law
  • Must be a Kansas resident

Additional Application Materials

  • Two letters of recommendation (preferably from law school professors, judges, or practicing attorneys).
  • Current law school transcript.

This scholarship promotes the practice of law in rural Kansas. Applicants must originally be from Kansas and attending either the University of Kansas School of Law or Washburn University School of Law. Additionally, applicants must be committed to practicing law in rural Kansas, preferably western Kansas. An award will be based on merit and recommendations rather than financial need.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Attending the University of Kansas School of Law or Washburn University School of Law
  • Originally from Kansas
  • Completion of at least 60 credit hours
  • Bona fide intent to practice in rural Kansas

Additional Application Materials

  • Two letters of recommendation (preferably from law school professors, judges, or practicing attorneys).
  • Current law school transcript.

This scholarship promotes the practice of law in the state of Kansas by awarding funds to a student who has demonstrated a bona fide intent to practice law in the state of Kansas. Applicants must exhibit professionalism and high character in their personal and professional lives, as demonstrated in their application materials. The award will be based on student participation in law school, community activities, financial need, and academic achievement. Students of culturally diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be a 2L at Washburn, KU, Creighton, or Oklahoma City Schools of Law

Additional Application Materials

  • Two letters of recommendation (preferably from law school professors, judges, or practicing attorneys).
  • Current law school transcript.

Before You Begin

To speed up your application process, please have these materials and links ready before you begin filling out the scholarship application form:

  • College or law school transcript — This can be a digital file, a URL, or printed and mailed.
  • Names of the persons writing your two letters of recommendation. NOTE: The letters can be general (to cover any scholarship you have applied for) and should be addressed to:

Depending on the scholarships you apply for, you may be asked a combination of the following essay questions with a maximum answer of 500 words each:

  • Briefly describe why you decided to go to law school.
  • Please describe your plans to practice in Kansas.
  • Briefly describe how this scholarship would benefit you financially and beyond.
  • Briefly describe your participation in events and or extracurricular programs at your law school.
  • Briefly describe your volunteer community service experience. Include charities, non-profit organizations, clubs, etc. (Do not include activities related to law school. They should be recorded in the previous question.)
  • Please list awards/honors/scholarships that you have received in the past six years.
  • Please list your paid work experience during the past five years.
