Sally Pokorny Elected President of the Kansas Bar Foundation
(July 14, 2006) Topeka, KSSally D. Pokorny, Lawrence, has been elected to serve as president of the Kansas Bar Foundation (KBF) for a one-year term until June 2007. She succeeds H. David Starkey, Colby, who recently completed a term as president of the Foundation.
“For nearly fifty years, the Kansas Bar Foundation has provided assistance to charitable and educational programs which benefit the citizens of Kansas,” said Pokorny. “Since 2000, the Foundation has awarded more than $1 million in grants to provide legal services to those who cannot afford them and educational programs in our schools for our children.”
“I am proud and honored to serve the Kansas Bar Foundation and the benevolent tradition of Kansas lawyers.”
Pokorny is an of counsel member in the Law Offices of David J. Brown in Lawrence in the areas of criminal defense and domestic law. Pokorny has served on the KBF Board of Trustees since 1999, serving as the district three trustee from 1999-2005, as secretary-treasurer in 2004-2005, and as president-elect in 2005-2006. She also currently serves as the South East Regional Chairperson of its Raising the Bar Committee.
A member of the Kansas Bar Association since 1978, she is a member of the KBA Nominating and Access to Justice committees, and is a member of the criminal law and family law sections.
Pokorny graduated with honors from the Washburn University School of Law in 1978. She served as an assistant district attorney until 1981 and later served as the assistant county attorney and then county attorney for Montgomery County until 1989. Pokorny then entered private practice in Independence in 1989.
Pokorny has been active in numerous community activities including serving as a board member of the Montgomery County American Cancer Society and the Independence Community Chest, and as a member of the Business and Professional Women’s Association. She is also a member of the Kansas Women Attorney’s Association Board of Directors, the Soroptimist International of Independence, and the Montgomery County Bar Association.
