Committees, Task Forces, and Panels:

ACCESS TO JUSTICE COMMITTEE — To develop and implement programs to ensure equal access to the legal system with the goal of equal access to the justice system for all members of our society regardless of their income or physical circumstances.

ANNUAL MEETING PLANNING TASK FORCE — To direct the overall planning of the KBA Annual Meeting, as well as any Southern Conference of Bar Presidents convention that might be scheduled in Kansas.

AWARDS COMMITTEE — To solicit award nominations, implement a process for encouraging award nominations, review award nominations, and make recommendations to the KBA President for awards to be given each year by the Kansas Bar Association.

BENCH-BAR COMMITTEE — To develop programs and make recommendations for improving the relationship and communication between the bench and bar.

CONTINUING LEGAL EDUCATION COMMITTEE — To implement a multi faceted continuing legal education program, which enhances the competence of Kansas lawyers via quality programs and materials offered in an affordable and accessible manner.

DIVERSITY COMMITTEE — To assist the KBA with its goals of increasing diversity within the Kansas legal profession so that the demographics of the legal profession mirror the demographics of the population of Kansas in the year 2020.

ETHICS ADVISORY COMMITTEE — To provide advisory opinions to KBA members on questions concerning ethical standards and practices, and to otherwise help educate lawyers about their ethical obligations and provide professional guidance in the area of ethical conduct.

ETHICS GRIEVANCE PANEL — To investigate complaints and make recommendations to the Disciplinary Administrator as to proper action in conformity with the rules of the Supreme Court relating to legal ethics.

FEE DISPUTE RESOLUTION PANEL — This Committee operates a statewide resolution system to assist attorneys and their clients settle fee disputes fairly, inexpensively and promptly.

JOURNAL BOARD OF EDITORS — To select and edit articles and to oversee publication of The Journal of the Kansas Bar Association.

LAW-RELATED EDUCATION COMMITTEE — To develop programs and make recommendations to improve relationships and communications between the public and the Bar.

LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE — To consider legislative positions and make recommendations to the Board of Governors on all matters relating to the amendment of laws and new legislation, including acts recommended by the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws; and to endeavor to secure enactment of proposed legislation approved and recommended for passage by the Board of Governors.

MEDIA-BAR COMMITTEE — To act as a liaison between the bar, the bench, and the news media for a continuing exchange of views; providing a ready forum to provide education and to consider mutual problems if they arise; and recommending actions to address these issues.

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE — To help recruit and retain members, and develop member benefits.

NOMINATING COMMITTEE — To seek and submit annual nominations for KBA officers and the Board of Governors when no petition is filed for a vacancy in a given KBA district.

PARALEGALS COMMITTEE — The KBA Paralegal Committee was formed to promote and maintain high standards in the effective utilization of paralegals throughout the state of Kansas and is comprised of practicing paralegals, paralegal educators, and attorneys. The committee welcomes other KBA members/associate members who share this common interest. The committee is ever vigilant in its efforts to promote the profession through its ongoing monitoring of issues facing paralegals today.

RAISING THE BAR COMMITTEE — The Raising the Bar (RTB) Committee oversees the fundraising phase of the RTB campaign and is comprised of KBA past presidents as well as the chairpersons of five regions within the state.

SOUTHERN CONFERENCE OF BAR PRESIDENTS HOST TASK FORCE — To direct the overall planning of the 2009 SCBP convention that is scheduled in Kansas.

STANDARDS FOR TITLE EXAMINATIONS COMMITTEE — To develop, adopt, and recommend title examination standards for members of the Bar.

UNAUTHORIZED PRACTICE OF LAW COMMITTEE — To monitor issues involving unauthorized practice of law including the provision of legal services to the public by non-lawyers or business entities. The Committee shall provide comment and analysis to the KBA Board of Governors regarding suspected UPL activity and recommendations concerning steps, which might be taken to address this problem. The Committee shall also propose and implement measures to educate the public and the legal profession about unauthorized practice of law issues and make recommendations to the Supreme Court of Kansas upon request of the Board.
